In August 2017 Sergio Riverin and Trina Cholewicki purchased, for $230,000.00, the offices situated at 129 Hillcrest Avenue in Lachine, Province of Quebec, from Industries Lacombe inc., owned in equal parts by Debbie Maddocks and Dan MacDonald. They took possession of the property on September 1st, 2017. At the outset, a faint smell that emanated from the wall-to-wall carpet in the basement was attributed to the storage of dog food by the previous owners. During the winter, the smell increased. In June 2018, Riverin and Cholewicki decided to have the carpet cleaned, only to discover that the smell increased after the cleaning instead of disappearing. They decided to change the carpet. Upon removing it, they discovered that the wooden floor was partly rotten and covered with mold and mildew. Riverin then discovered that the water came from the pipes in the adjacent bathroom. The entire bathroom made of ceramic tiles had to be demolished to discover that it was a home-made construction that did not meet the applicable standards and building codes. Basically, that was the cause over time of major water infiltration through the wooden floor and the walls of the bathroom.
