A client is asking to design a six-storey residential building in Amman (particularly in Khalda). The structure contains flats of identical plans. A floor plan is shown in Fig. 1. The client is considering two options for the structure to be built as concrete or steel.
Analysis and Design Input Data:
Columns for floors 1-3 are 50x50 cm.
Columns for floors 4-6 are 40x40 cm.
Beams for all floors are 40x60 cm.
Fc=30 MPa for all frame elements.
Fy =420 MPa for main and secondary reinforcement.
Each floor height =3.5 m
Wind Loading
Use the plan given in Fig. 1 and based on the location of the building which is in Khalda-Amman, choose the Vb (wind speed) value. Use the Jordanian code to calculate all formulas and specify how can you find out:
Wind pressure, and the influence of studding the two scenarios as concrete and steel on the wind load analysis.
Shear forces.
Lateral Load.
Uplift Load.
Based on the columns dimensions specified in the plan determine if more stiffening is required. (You have to determine shear, bending and lateral displacements to comment on the stiffness).
Discuss the effect on the lateral displacements if steel structure is used, specify similar steel sections (W12*16, theoretically) for both columns and beams, try again using a bigger section of steel.
What is the relationship between bending, shear and deflection and what would be the difference in results if both scenarios are discussed?
Columns and Footings Design
Design one single and one biaxial column (Both columns should be considered short columns). Take the Live load for residential buildings to be 2 kN/m2. To calculate the dead load, assume the density of the concrete to be 25kn/m3(use proper thicknesses for other materials and assume their densities).
