SECTION A [40 MARKS] Read the article below and answer ALL the questions that follow. Nandos On Sustainability And People Sustainability is nothing new to Nandos. For almost a decade we have had a dedicated sustainability team beavering away behind the scenes to ensure that we are treading lightly on our planet and supporting communities close to our restaurants and in Southern Africa. Some of the achievements we are most proud of over the years include: - In July 2020, signed up to both the Science Based Targets initiative and the Better Chicken Commitment a first in combining improvements in sustainability with animal welfare. - Committed to achieving absolute zero direct emissions and reducing the carbon footprint of a Nandos meal by a further 50% by 2030 while pledging significant improvements to chicken welfare by 2026. - Reduced the carbon footprint of an average Nandos meal by 40% since 2015. - Offsetting all our emissions across restaurants and supply chain, so every restaurant, meal, delivery and sauce bottle will be carbon neutral by November 2021. - Moved to 100% renewable electricity and gas across Nandos business in England, Scotland and Wales, with Ireland being next. - Starting No Chuckin our Chicken, a food donation programme we kicked off back in 2013 which supports over 450 local charities across the UK. To date we have donated over 2.8 million meals and over 60,000 meals to NHS and front line workers during the pandemic. - Supporting the eradication of malaria from Mozambique, through our partnership with Goodbye Malaria. Over the past four years we have protected the lives of over 1 million people 1,166,111. To support this important work we have raised 1,874,201 since 2017. - Increased recycling rate by 20% over the last year over 85% of UK&I restaurants recycle every possible waste stream (food waste [85%], dry mixed recycling [91%] and glass [93%]). - Proud to have been awarded the Sustainable Restaurant Associations 3-star rating which is their top restaurant rating. Over three consecutive years we have won various awards at the SRA Awards. Our approach is all about joining the dots, not ticking the boxes. So, were tackling climate change and chicken welfare, food waste and food redistribution altogether. We apply science and rigour to what we do and, whilst we have a team of inhouse sustainability experts, we also collaborate with external partners including the Soil Association who advise on sustainable farming, South Pole who support our offsetting projects and Compassion in World Farm for advice on improving Chicken Welfare. Whilst we have cared about sustainability for a long time, we know that we have not done enough. We are not perfect yet, but were working hard to get better all the time. For The People At Nando's were all about the people. It's the people that make the chicken and its the people that bring the passion to our restaurants. From the vibrant communities weve built restaurants and relationships in to the people we work with in Southern Africa, weve set our sights on creating lasting happiness and a positive social impact wherever we go. Our restaurants are a part of the rich tapestry of each local community and we want to make sure were giving back, so that every neighbourhood can prosper. A beacon in the community
Every Nandos restaurant builds their own partnerships with local charities and has the freedom to choose which ones theyd like to support, based on their local knowledge of whats needed in that area. We know how important it is to make personal connections and get things done quickly, so we leave the red tape out and let them get on with it. To do this, weve created an easy-to-access community fund for each region, which means we can reach more people in a more personal way and make a real difference to each local community. A lot of the charities we work with are homeless charities and we support them through food donation or volunteering. Weve also run CV workshops and interview preparation to help get people back into work and hosted recruitment events for homeless youth to support their independence, develop their life skills and hopefully offer them a job at Nandos afterwards. New openings, new opportunities Its important to us that were a force for good in our communities from day one, so before we even open a new restaurant, we start working on projects that benefit the local area. Whenever we build or refurbish a restaurant, were surrounded by world class designers, contractors, builders and equipment. So while we have them there, we meet up with a local charity and work on a project together, like designing and building a new diner-style dining room for an elderly care home or repurposing an old telephone box into a community donation space or contributing to local playground and garden projects. Our food donation program We refuse to waste food when people are going hungry. As a restaurant business, weve learned that some food waste is unavoidable, but we try to reduce it as much as possible by cooking chicken only when its needed. Since 2013 at the end of every night, any cooked chicken that hasnt been sold is temperature checked, frozen and given to one of the restaurants charity partners as part of our No Chucking Our Chicken programme. We have over 530 charity partners across Ireland and the UK, supporting all kinds of causes, including youth, homelessness, refugees, and women and family shelters. If theres any food waste we cant donate, we send it to Anaerobic Digestion where it is turned into renewable energy and agricultural fertiliser. Adapted from: Anon. 2023.
