Select a leader that you would like to study. It can be a historical figure (eg. a President, CEO or another famous person who is either still living or deceased) or someone you work with or know. You may also choose to write about yourself. You will highlight their particular leadership style and their method of making ethical decisions. If you are using a coworker or someone you know, interview them to gather this data. In addition, share an example or examples of ethical decisions that they had to make that were challenging or are illustrative of their particular style. Keep in mind that although good leaders provide wonderful examples, those that make poor decisions can also provide us with an example regarding what conduct or decision making styles are not acceptable. You may also look at the work and personal styles evidenced by your leader.
Your assignment should contain biographical information about the individual and also events that shaped who he/she has become. What influenced the persons ethical style/approach?
Next, describe a situation(s) or event(s) that presented an ethical challenge to this leader; a complete description of the ethical dilemma including classifying the type of dilemma (i.e. moral hazard, right vs right decision, agency problem, etc). Also, discuss various potential solutions that were available to the leader (i.e.one or more solutions which are both ethical and feasible) and how the leader ultimately resolved the ethical conundrum they faced.
Finally, discuss the importance of ethical leadership as well as your own analytical observations regarding the topic. What is ethical leadership to you and how has this class enabled you to refine the concepts of ethics and ethical leadership?
