What's your hypothesis for this study? Keep in mind, the more specific your hypothesis, the easier it is to test it (so, you can't test "middle children are awesome" - that's too general of a statement!! but "there's a correlation between being the middle child and being independent" is a better start.).

Also, remember, the only way to establish a cause-and-effect relationship is to design a controlled experiment.
