LightSpeed Inc LSI opened for business on November with just twenty employees. They have been growing steadily since and currently have over employees.
LSI installs and maintains energy infrastructure across Ontario. They mainly focus on electricity distribution stations and networks and, recently, electric vehicle EV charging stations. The demand for these services has skyrocketed, and LSI is facing heavy competition from larger companies from across Canada and around the world. These companies also succeed in attracting and retaining top talent to work for them. In the past year LSI has unfortunately had to turn down some large contracts as they did not have enough workers to handle them. This represented a loss of approximately C$ million in revenues.
The new CEO, Trisha Wayne, has asked to meet with you. At this meeting she raised the concern about the shortage of workers and has asked you as the HR manager to come back to her within a week with some recommendations on what can be done about this in future. She also walked you through the business plan for the coming year that she and the executive team have just finalized.
Trisha highlighted the main aspects of the business plan that were relevant for HR planning purposes, ie that two new projects were confirmed for the new fiscal year and updates on three projects that were currently in progress. The heads of the relevant departments provided the number of workers they expect that they will need for each project:
Two new projects have been confirmed for the new fiscal year:
Project Firefly: a total of workers will be needed: project manager, team leaders, electrical engineers. Start date: April
Project Sparkle: a total of workers will be needed: project manager, team leaders, electrical engineers. Start date: May
The following projects that are presently underway are expected to continue into next year at the current staffing levels as follows:
Project Buzz: project manager, team leaders, electrical engineers are assigned to this project; on track for completion end of March.
Feasibility study: project manager senior analysts former team leaders currently working on this, after which they will all be available to resume team leader duties. On track for completion midApril.
Infrastructure project: a total of workers already assigned to this project; started January on track for completion at the end of
