Peer:
After reading the module resources and based on my own experiences, I believe the primary responsibility for managing fake news and its consequences falls on every individual at some level. Consumers should research products, companies, and shops they are unfamiliar with before making purchases. Businesses should be responsible for fake news and advertising related to their products and brands. I see advertisements online for diet pills offering people the chance to lose pounds in thirty days without exercise or diet, and I would never just click on it to buy it without finding credible evidence supporting the product is not a scam for the company to make a quick buck. We tend to trust government authorities to be accurate with the information they share but that does not make them any more responsible for managing the fake news unless perhaps it is of specific concern to them. As for social media companies, there is no denying the role they have in controlling the spread of fake news on their platforms as they are profiting from misinformation Breland et al These social media companies should selfregulate and be more responsible for their control in spreading fake news. I rarely use social media sites because many of the popular ones today lack ethical values. This circles back to individual users being aware of misguiding information to influence their attitudes and behavior.
A company that allows its ads to run on a controversial website lacks ethical practice and risks the integrity of its brand and image. Suppose consumers decide to speak up after purchasing the product from acontroversial website, such as leaving reviews or feedback reports. In that case, it will harm the reputation and image of the company. Today, we can access more information than ever as well as instantly share that information with the world. As I said earlier with consumers researching products they are unfamiliar with before purchasing, a company should ensure they know who they paid to promote their products Breland et al
It is hard enough to control the information we want others to access, so I would never make the approach to advertising my product more vulnerable to backlash and criticism by using a website that includes commonly accepted bias or hate speech. The money saved in the short run is not worth the long run potential drawbacks and risks. I would instead look for other ways to expand the market I am targeting along with the promotion of my product, such as taking advantage of the local listings physical and online Digital advertising if done the right way is a more efficient and cheaper way to promote your company or product. It may take longer to increase sales and find ways to cut back on costs but at least my company has a greater chance of surviving to make those decisions down the road. The course of legal action is more likely to rise with falsely advertising your product because you are deceiving the buyer of what they are spending their money on for your personal or company gain.
