Multiculturalism and respecting 'pluralism and difference' is easy when we only focus on festivals and food, but it can be difficult when we touch on sensitive topics. With that in mind, please enter into this discussion with sensitivity and civility.

Discussion Question:

Provide an example of how you have experienced/witnessed/heard about a conflict between Charter rights and the respect for diversity - see below for some examples. Provide a way to mediate/solve this dispute.

Charter Rights/Diversity Issues examples

Places of worship refusing to marrying same-sex couples - Is this okay? Does it conflict with the Charter? What about the rights of the priest/rabbi/minister/Imam, etc.? Co-workers getting days off for religious holidays that aren't part of state-sanctioned holidays. Does this create tension in the workplace? Government services employees wearing religious symbols (Christian cross, head scarf, etc.) - Is it okay to wear religious symbols in secular, government spaces? The Quebec provincial government has tried to ban certain religious symbols being worn by public servants and people using public services
