Simple Harmonic Motion, Waves, and Sound Module Lab Initial Set-Up
Initial Conditions (shown in the image below)
- Mass = 100 g
- Spring Constant at Midpoint
- Damping - None
- Speed (in lower right) - Slow
- Pull the timer and ruler out from the small box on the right
- Stretch the spring (if you haven't hit the pause button, the spring should be oscillating)
- Hit Play on the timer to begin timing when the spring is fully extended. (For one complete oscillation, the mass must return to the fully extended position)
The spring should be stretched a small amount, so the oscillations do not go beyond the screen. If the damping is set to none the amplitude should not change.
When you change the mass, the amount the spring is stretched will need to be adjusted; smaller amount for the 50 g mass and larger amount for the 250 g mass.
