All of the known data have been placed on Figure E$6\mathrm{.}4.$ The process is an open, steady$-$state system without reaction. If you examine the figure, two questions naturally arise: What basis should you pick, and what system should you pick to start the analysis? The selection of certain bases and certain systems can lead to more equations that have to be solved simultaneously than others. You could pick as a basis $F=100Jb,$ or $M=10007l($the same as $1hr),$ or the value of any of the intermediate flow streams. You could pick an overall process as the system to start with, or any of the individual units, or any consecutive combinations of units. We will pick $M$ because its value is specified.
