Medicare provides healthcare coverage that is a federal program for people over the age of 65. It also covers people under the age of 65 with disabilities. Medicare is funded by payroll taxes. This is paid by employees, employers and people that are self employed.

Medicaid provides healthcare coverage that is a state and federal program. Medicaid helps low income families get healthcare.

CHIP provides low cost healthcare to children in families that make too much to qualify for Medicaid. Depending on the state you live in it covers pregnant women too. CHIP is jointly funded by both the state and federal government. They use a formula based on the data of the FMAP. The Federal Medical Assistance Percentages formula takes the per capita income from each state and compares it to the national average which cannot be less than 50 percent.

The four parts of Medicare are Part A, Part B, Part C and Part D. Part A provides inpatient and hospital coverage. Part B provides outpatient and medical coverage. Part C offers an alternate way for you to receive your Medicare benefits. Part D provides prescription drug coverage.

There are a few ways you do not have to pay premiums for Medicare Part A. If you have paid Medicare tax for over 10 years or are age 65 or older you do not have to pay premiums. The other exceptions to not having to pay a premium is if you are disabiled, end stage renal cancer, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Prospective payment system is a method of reimbursement. Medicare had a predetermined amount that is made in payments. Depending on the service you receive depends on the payment amount.
