Step 1 Create a highlevel Process Flow across the two companies Create your list of tasks or process steps that you think need to be done to take Fleetwings and FBN from start to finish Start might mean We dont know if we do this at all Finish might mean Weve got a good working system for identity management and access control in place for both companies combined together as one organization Feel free to adjust those or suggest your own start and finish states Suggestion Start this as a row in a spreadsheet one task per column Dont worry about branches loops or going backward in your plan yet Lay this out step by step Dont worry about getting the steps in the right order yet Just get creative Focus on the verbsthe actions that need to be taken Make your first task a Start task like Start Merging Identity Mgmt Access Control Activities This should be the first leftmost task in your flow Dont worry about the who yet Just find the work packages the major steps of effort that need to get done Make your process flow go from left to right Put an End task a box that says End as the last step in your flow Use plain boxesdo not color fill at this time Compare that list of tasks or process steps with the set of three 3 lists of questions Chances are really good that answering some of your questions is tied to a step on your Action Plan If so draw a connecting link or describe the connection or something Or add blank rows to put the questions into cells that correspond to those process steps How many process steps You should probably have a dozen or more Step 2 Add Two Swim Lanesone for Fleetwings the other for FlyByNet Work your way across each row process step by process step Ask yourself for each cell and process step Does this organization needs to do that task If so say so in that cell Explain your reasoning briefly Once youve done that for both companies step back and reflect Since we consider Fleetwings to be the driver of this process it might be reasonable that they do some tasks and FlyByNet doesnt Conversely if you think FlyByNet has much more work to do to answer your teams IA Plan questions then maybe they have more work more tasks more process steps than Fleetwings does Example Data Calls Each time your team orFleetwings asks FlyByNet for a set of information a data call that breaks down into several tasks Fleetwings asks for specific data FlyByNet generates finds extracts and assembles the data FlyByNet hands the data over to Fleetwings Fleetwings reviews it for completeness and correctness and if it finds errors concerns or problems the cycle repeats As a result your twolane Work Flow or Swim Lane might have many of these data exchangehandover kind of overandbackagain patterns Thats good Keep getting creative add columns to your spreadsheet to add more tasks or granularity as you break larger tasks down Step 3 Rearrange tasks in the proper time sequence as necessary You may find that youve added a bunch of columns tasks that really need to move earlier or later in the overall process flow Move them around now
