For this discussion, I decided to use the active reading strategy to engage with both the article "24 Reasons Why Mentorship Is Important for Mentee and Mentor" and the CHAMPS website. Active reading involves interacting with the text while reading, such as highlighting key points, making notes in the margins, and asking questions as I go. This strategy helped me better understand the material by prompting me to think critically about the information presented and how it connects to my own experiences and ideas.

While reading the article, I highlighted key benefits of mentorship, such as how mentors provide guidance and support that can help mentees achieve personal and professional goals. I also noted the importance of mentorship in building confidence and expanding networks. As I explored the CHAMPS website, I made sure to read through the various dropdown sections, watched the video, and read the student comments. I actively took notes on how the website provided examples of mentorship in action and how it emphasized creating a positive and supportive environment for both the mentor and mentee.

I feel that active reading significantly helped me understand the key ideas in both sources. It made me more engaged with the content, and I found myself reflecting on how the concepts of mentorship from the article were present in the CHAMPS program. For example, both emphasized the importance of mentors providing guidance, feedback, and support to help mentees grow. The CHAMPS site reinforced this by offering a structured approach to mentoring through its plans and strategies.

A strategy that would complement or replace active reading is summarizing. This strategy involves summarizing key ideas and concepts in my own words after reading a section. It could help consolidate my understanding of the material and improve retention

The strategy I used to read the article and review the CHAMPS website is the SQ3R method, which stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. Here is how I apply it: I start by skimming the article and the CHAMPS website to gain an overview of the content, attention to headings, subheadings, introductory and concluding paragraphs, and any images or diagrams. I transform the heading into questions. For instance, ask, What is CHAMPS? or What are the benefits of mentoring? I also read actively to find answers to my questions. This approach helps me stay focused and engaged with the material. After reading a section, I summarize the main points in my own words. This practice reinforces understanding and retention. Once I have completed the article and website, I revisit my notes and summaries to consolidate the information in my mind.

The SQ3R method is effective for thorough and detailed reading. It promotes multiple interactions with the text, enhancing understanding and retention. Additionally, it helps organize thoughts and ensures the extraction of essential information from different sections.

Another helpful strategy is the Cornell Note-Taking System, which divides my note pages into three sections: cues, notes, and summary. This method helps organize thoughts during reading and provides a structured way to review and study afterward.
