Structural modeling project - Spring 2024
Due date/time
The project must be submitted to Blackboard by Thursday May 2,2024, at 1:30 pm. You can work in teams of up to
four students maximum. Please submit a fully typed report (in PDF format) presenting all your calculations and
conclusions. The task distribution sheet must also be filled and included in an appendix of the report. Put your
names and students ID numbers on the cover page. All hand calculations must be neatly typed - not handwritten.
The units to be used in the analyses (hand calculations and modeling) are kilonewtons and meters.
Hypotheses
The bridge shown below is a rigid frame comprising a horizontal deck of width b=15m and depth h=0.8m,
continuous with inclined legs/crutches of similar cross-section. Linear springs of stiffness kl=105kNm on top of
rigid abutments support the extremities of the deck. The crutches are connected to shallow foundations acting as pin
supports combined with angular springs of stiffness kr=106kN.mrad. A uniformly distributed load w=10kNm
and a temperature gradient T=12C are applied to the deck. Take E=60GPa and =1210-6C.
Requirements
Hand calculations: using each of (i) the force method, (ii) the method of slope-deflection equations and (iii) the
method of moment distribution, determine the following:
a) the internal forces and moments M,V and N at the center of the bridge's deck,
b) the support reactions at the extremities of the deck and at the bottom of the crutches,
c) the diagrams of M,V and N in the deck and in the crutches, and
d) the vertical deflection at the center of the bridge's deck.
Model the structure using one of the structural modeling programs available at NDU, such as SAP 2000, ROBOT,
ANSYS, ABAQUS, RDM... etc. and determine the same as in 1(a-d).
Present a detailed table comparing all the results determined with all the methods used in (1) and (2). Analyze
the results and conclude.
Warning
All the team members must contribute equally to the project. Any discrepancies in this regard or any sign of
cheating, including subcontracting or plagiarism (from any source, including the internet and previous project
reports) will result in a grade of zero on the project and a letter grade of "F" on the entire course.
