Students construct a WBS using the hierarchical box format or the coding scheme $(15$K Run $,1\mathrm{.}1$ Course, $1\mathrm{.}1\mathrm{.}1$ Signs$).$ Students should be reminded to focus on deliverables and to break each deliverable into subcomponents as they proceed to the next level of the WBS$.$ One common mistake is to identify groups of people $($clean$-$up crew, race committee$)$ and not what they accomplish $($deliverables$).$ A second issue is level of detail or how many levels does the WBS have. For example, the group responsible for safety may create a WBS that goes no farther than $3$ or $4$ levels, while the subcommittee responsible for the race course may break their deliverable even further.
