QUESTION [20 MARKS]
Tom had just graduated from university when he applied to join The CIMB Group, one of the largest banks in Malaysia, as a Management Trainee. This position would expose the new employee to various departments within the group after which he or she would become permanent staff at the bank.
It was during a training session that Tom got to know Teh, a trainer at a process session. After training, Teh approached Tom and they started talking about careers and their education backgrounds. Teh suggested Tom should join the union set up by officers and executives called the Association of Bank Union(A.B.U). Initially, Tom was apprehensive about joining as he was afraid that it would jeopardize his chances at work. At university, his lecturers never really talked about unions. Tom asked, What can A.B.U do for me?
Teh replied, A.B.U works hard to protect and improve working conditions for the members. A.B.U has won many benefits over the years that are now taken for granted asrights. These included: full medical coverage for the officer and his/her immediate family members, protection from workplace discrimination and harassment, and refreshment allowance.
Tom seemed somewhat unsure about joining A.B.U because he felt afraid about the prospects of putting his career in jeopardy. After the training, Tom met up with a few other senior colleagues. One of them asked, Are you planning to join A.B.U? Its good, you know. Another worker commented that there were a lot of benefits to joining a union. He said, If you join A.B.U, you can be protected from exploitation and discrimination in the workplace. Apart from that it can help you sort out any problems at work. Access to more opportunities for training will also be given to you.
Teh added, Why not come to the meeting next week at A.B.U. I will email you the details. Maybe you should check out the A.B.U website for further information. Tom was still unsure but replied, Alright, please email me the details.
