1. Josh, our used car lot owner, has resolved his performance appraisal problem. However, as his business is expanding he has encountered a new problem. As he grows, Josh needs to promote his current sales people to management roles. Dane, his rockstar employee, has been passed over twice for promotion. Instead of promoting Dane, Josh has promoted his sister Abbey to sales manager. Abbeys performance is much worse than Danes, and people feel she was promoted just because she is family. Dane and the other sales people feel this is unfair and have begun slacking off and even stealing sales from Abbey. Josh has good intentions, but clearly is doing something wrong. How can you help Josh bring his business back to normal?

2. Claire, our pharmacy owner, has increased the satisfaction of her employees thanks to some great help from a consultant. Now that she has a motivated staff, she is trying some innovative approaches to running a pharmacy. In order to serve her customers more quickly she decides to have a tv screen in the lobby that lists upcoming patients, their medication, and their health issue. She feels this will give the employees and customers a sense of where there are in the workflow. However, customers are upset! She cant understand why people dont like this. She thinks to herself, I would love this, why dont other people!, My brother said this was a good idea, why doesnt everyone else!, and these people must all just be cranky. Claires idea clearly isnt working, help her figure out why.

3. Shan is a Chinese graduate student in HR. She finally lands her first big job as an HR manager at a major automotive manufacturer. While she is extremely knowledgeable, she finds that many of her ideas are being overlooked. She initiates a large-scale training program that receives feedback such as, Great idea, not feasible right now or Lets meet next week to talk about this. Marcus, the head of organizational development, the person who hired Shan, is wondering why she seems to be lacking the productivity he has expected. 4. At your sports management firm, you have been managing a team of student interns for about 3 months. A number of them are succeeding, but one in particular is struggling. You are surprised because in private conversations with this student they have great ideas, seem sharp and personable, but still struggle with the job.
