Application Case

Your project team has finished gathering the customer requirements and is developing the solution design for a large cloud HR software implementation.

The project team is split into three main groups: the first group, located in London Canada consists of the Project Manager, Business Analysts, and Management.

The second team, located in San Diego USA consists of Architects.

The third team, located in Hong Kong Hong Kong, consists of Development, Engineering and Quality Assurance teams.

The project WBS and the schedule were developed based on work estimates from the teams in San Diego and Hong Kong.

The development team agreed to provide daily updates to you (the project manager) to report progress against the Scope and Time Baselines, to make sure that the projects milestones are going to be met.

However, by the time the development team got close to the first milestone, it became obvious that they were behind schedule, even though their daily updates indicated that they were on track.

In addition, they have adopted a different design approach from the one agreed upon at the beginning of the project and specified by the architects.

The lack of trustworthy updates from the development team along with a different design approach has jeopardized the whole project and rendered the entire plan obsolete. Your team is now at risk of not delivering the project.

1. What could have the team done differently in managing this project to prevent the dismal status of the project described above? (10 marks)
