Question:
Summarize this interview/interview responses and then identify strengths and improvement opportunities:
1) How important is onboarding to you? Why is that so?
- It is important to me to get a feel for onboarding as it makes me feel more comfortable with whatever it is that is asked for in the new job.
2) Did you feel like you were properly trained to perform your duties? If not, what additional training would have been helpful?
- I felt like I was not quite properly trained, but I had asked a good number of questions along the way.
3) Were there any challenges you faced during your onboarding process?
- Just feeling out of place, everybody knows everybody already and knew what was going on, where I didn’t and kind of had to learn and watch on my own to get comfortable.
4) Do you have any suggestions for improving the onboarding process at this company?
- Maybe give the new guys a day to just watch and not try to be too involved or inform them to be involved from the jump. -
5) How did you feel during your first couple weeks? Did you feel like you were properly introduced to the team and its culture?
- I was introduced to the team yes, and was informed of the culture, it was just a more intense situation than I had thought.
6) Can you describe a time during your onboarding process when you received helpful support or guidance from your manager or colleagues?
- I was very uncomfortable during a workout, and some of the other managers had just started talking to me and getting to know me instead of worrying about how I was doing in the workout.
7) Looking back on your onboarding experience, is there anything you wish you had done differently or that would have made your transition to the team smoother?
- I tried to be involved earlier, give more effort earlier so that I was comfortable sooner.
8) Can you tell me about your experience on your first day at the company? What stood out to you?
- My first day was very fun but also very confusing. Everything happened so fast, but it was basketball stuff, so it was fun. I just kind of watched and tried to not get in the way while still trying to be a part of it. So, it was fun but was confusing and a little bit of a struggle for me at the beginning.
9) How did you feel when you first started working here? What were your expectations, and were they met?
- I did not expect to be spending so much time as to what it actually is spent there. I expected it to be all fun and basically just being on a basketball team, but being a manager is like being a miniature coach, doing all the things that are a struggle for other people, and just making things run smoothly.
10) Can you walk me through the onboarding process? What did you find helpful, and what could have been improved?
- One thing that was helpful was how friendly everybody was, it really helped me get comfortable quickly when I felt uncomfortable. One thing that could be improved was maybe just a bit more involvement and attention to the new guy instead of having him try to tag along from the jump.
11) How would you describe your onboarding experience? Were there any aspects that stood out to you as particularly helpful or challenging?
- One thing that was challenging was having to try to just jump in and really have no clue or direction but just trying to fit in. -
12) How did your company support your integration into the team and culture? Were there any specific initiatives or resources that you found helpful?
- They supported me in a way that I didn’t expect, by using the calmer stuff to help me feel comfortable, while normally I would think that during the hard part is when people try to drag you along.
13) Looking back, is there anything that you wish the company had done differently during your onboarding experience? How do you think the process could be improved for future employees?
- I wished they would have tried a little more to help me mix into the confusing part with practice and the things that move a lot faster.
