Statistics is the process of collecting data and also putting that data into categories, such as mean, median, frequency and standard deviation.Analytics takes that data and gives you impact and reasoning of what has happened.

There are three types of analytics. Descriptive analytics is the raw part of statistics where the data is put into form such as the mean, median and mode.Predictive analytics is where you use the data to predict what will happen in a market, whether it deals with car sales or stocks.Last you have Prescriptive analytics where you find ways to choose directions based on the data to get a desired outcome.

Companies use Analytics for various ways to increase profit.Most of us in America have visited a Walmart. Why is the Walmart in this neighborhood?Who decided that it should be there.Companies look at several things.But let's make it simple. You have a town where there is 25,000 people in a given area. You look at the average travel distance that people drive to the store.You find that there are 8,000 drivers who are driving for 25 minutes just to get to the store. You also find in survey that many of those customers will stop at a competitor's store because it closer.You then realize that it would be beneficial to build another Walmart to alleviate the travel and compete with smaller competitors. Surveys are usually the method used to find the data needed for the company to make good decisions.
