Switch to the graphical terminal $($tty$1)$ by pressing Ctrl$+$Alt$+$F$1,$ click your name $($which is the display name for the user account named user$1),$ supply the password of LINUXrocks!, and click Sign In$.$ Close the Getting Started window. By default, the GNOME desktop environment is started using Wayland.

Observe the GNOME desktop. Use your mouse to select the Activities menu in the upper$-$left corner of your screen, select the Show Applications icon $($at the bottom of the application panel$),$ and then navigate to Terminal to open a BASH shell prompt. What prompt do you receive and why?

At the command prompt, type who and press Enter to view the users logged in to the system. Note that you are currently logged into tty$2.$

Switch to the terminal tty$1$ by pressing Ctrl$+$Alt$+$F$1.$ Is the GDM still available? Switch back to your GNOME desktop on tty$2$ by pressing Ctrl$+$Alt$+$F$2.$

At the command prompt, type su $$ and press Enter to switch to the root user. Supply the root user password LINUXrocks! when prompted.

By default, the KDE desktop is not installed in Fedora Linux. To download and install the KDE desktop $($the latest edition is called Plasma Workspaces$),$ type dnf groupinstall "KDE Plasma Workspaces" and press Enter when finished. Press y when prompted to download and install the required packages from the Internet, which could take several minutes, depending on your Internet speed. The dnf command will be discussed in more detail in Chapter $11.$

Type reboot to restart Fedora Linux. After the system has rebooted, click your name at the GDM screen and then click the settings $($cog wheel$)$ icon in the lower$-$right corner. Note that you can start different desktop environments using either Wayland or X$.$org $($X$11).$ Select Plasma $($X$11)$ to start the KDE desktop on X$.$org, supply your password $($LINUXrocks$!),$ and click Sign In$.$
