Matthew did this in different ways. In some cases the connections are disputed, and in others the connections are clearer. The first of the fulfillments that we will look at is one of the best witnesses to the divinity of Christ; "All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us"). (Matthew 1:22,23, Isaiah 7:14, NIV) The historical OT context is the time in which King Ahaz is in fear of being conquered by a group of opposing kings. This is God's message through Isaiah to bring hope and encouragement to the kingdom of Judah. The Messiah was to come through the lineage of David in Judah, and as long as this is promised, then how could Judah be destroyed. Even though this prophecy would be fulfilled many years later it must have brought encouragement to know that God still had plans for Judah How do our textbook authors' view Matthew and other Gospel accounts that offer first century fulfillment for prophetic Old Testament statements?
