Take Action Choose a policy issue or problem you care a lot about. It could be any topic you learned about earlier in this class. In a paragraph, describe the issue in your own words and why you chose it. 1. Provide some statistics, data, or other evidence of the problem. It should come from a credible source that you reference. 2. Identify some ways that someone could get involved in doing something about this issue. 3. Identify an interest group that shares your opinion. Explain what the group is, give a website, and explain how someone could get involved with them as a volunteer, member, and so on. 4. Specifically identify by name a good popular, objective, unbiased news source that covers this issue regularly. Make a commitment to visit that source regularly. 5. Select the appropriate elected official at the appropriate governmental level who is in a position to vote on this policy issue. Send this official e-mail or a written letter containing the following: A. Describe a specific policy alternative that you would like the official to advocate. For example, do not just say "reduce global warming" but be more specific. B. Make a personal statement about why you care about it and why s/he should, too. C. Describe the problem or issue in a paragraph or two and use evidence to support your argument that it is a problem. Informally cite a credible source.
