Task: An ethical dilemma is a situation where a value (e.g., honesty, respect, responsibility, fairness,
compassion) conflicts with a human drive (e.g., greed/desire, loyalty/caring, belief/conviction, fear/anger).
Please write an ethical dilemma scenario for your peers to solve and facilitate the in-class discussion.
Instructions:
(1) Write up an ethical scenario: Begin by providing some context for the scenario. What was the situation,
and what was the ethical dilemma that you or your team members faced? Be as specific as possible and
provide details to help the reader understand the scenario.
An example scenario is: Letter of recommendation
Samesh has been teaching for about eight years. He excels at mentoring students and helping them prepare
for job interviews and graduate school. Min, a former student, has asked Samesh to support her job
application with a letter of recommendation. Its an excellent position with much potential. However, Min did
not perform well in Sameshs course, and because of his experience in class with Min, Samesh does not
believe she has the required skill for the job. When Samesh declines to write, Min is visibly distressed, telling
him that without his recommendation, she will not get the job and it is currently her only prospect.
(2) Facilitate the discussion during your mini-presentation: Ask the students to identify the values that are in
conflict in your scenario. Have the students brainstorm potential solutions to the ethical dilemma. Encourage
them to think creatively and consider all of the options available. Ask the students to reflect on what they
would do if they were in this situation. Describe the different options that were available to you or your team
members. What were the potential consequences of each option, and how did they align with the values in
conflict? Explain the decision that was made and the reasoning behind it. Why was this option chosen, and
how did it address the ethical dilemma? Reflect on the experience and what you learned from it. Did the
situation highlight any areas where you need to improve your ethical decision-making skills? What would you
do differently if you faced a similar scenario in the future?
Example questions: What is the ethical issue? What are the options for resolution? What would you do to
resolve it and why? What would you need to help you resolve it ethically?
