TASK:
First, develop your list of nine countries. Use these countries: Congo (Dem. Republic of), Ecuador, Laos, Lithuania, Somalia, Sweden, and the United States, PLUS two more countries: choose one that starts with Q, and another that starts with G. Put all of your countries (a total of 9) in alphabetical order.
Second, create a table in a word processing program like Microsoft Word (Note: a table, NOT a spreadsheet). You should have countries across the topmost row of your table so there is one country per column. Changing the page layout to "landscape" should help fit the table more neatly on the page.
Third, go to prb.org and find the following data for your countries to put into your table; not all information is available for every country, but at least some countries have info for every statistic. If you can't find one of the statistics using PRB.org you're doing something wrong. When there is no data available, enter a hyphen (like this: - ), not a zero; no data is not the same as zero. These variables should be the rows of your table, one variable per row.
Birth Rate
Death Rate
Infant Mortality Rate
Life Expectancy at Birth, by Gender
Total Fertility Rate
Gross National Income Per Capita PPP
PLUS two more measures you're personally interested in.
You may want to use PRB's glossary to look up what some of these are measuring and how they are calculated since not every statistic is described in geog100.org.
The PRB.org website makes it fairly easy to search by country or by "indicator", another name for variable. You'll probably find it easiest to search by indicator. Click on "Data", then "International" then "Indicators" and choose an indicator; to find your countries easily, click on the "tables" option and select your countries.
Criteria for Success: Your grade for this section depends on completeness and accuracy as well as how well you display the information. I want the table in a word processing document (not a spreadsheet), easy to read and ideally with all the data on one page. Simply copy-pasting the data report from PRB.org is NOT a table--you need to assemble this information into ONE table. If you need help creating a table, please contact me once you get stuck, or try the Internet for tips on making a table in Word or a similar word processing program.
