TEAM MEMBER FEEDBACK:
OVERVIEW:
This is your opportunity to practice giving and receiving both positive and constructive feedback, which is critical to the success of any team. You will write down your feedback for each team member.
This is where you demonstrate your ability to use the course concepts, models, and research in a real-world situation. Ensure you adequately reference the course concepts, models, and research using the APA style.
THINGS TO DO:
1. GIVING FEEDBACK:
Consider the following principles of feedback:
Start with a positive intent
Consider the concept of naming to frame the conversation (for example, This is uncomfortable for me, and yet we need to have this discussion)
Identify the topic of the first sentence, beginning with an I statement (for example, I have noticed)
Be direct and behaviorally specific for both positive and constructive feedback
Describe behaviors objectively and behaviors that can change or things they should do more of to improve
Do not use labels for either positive or negative behaviors, such as lazy or hard-working
Give an example of when they demonstrated the behavior to ensure understanding
Explain the impact of both positive and constructive behavior. For constructive feedback, explain the behavior you would like to see instead and the benefits to you or the team
Ask about intentions and circumstances you might not know about
Balance appreciation and specific suggestions
2. RECEIVING FEEDBACK:
Consider the principles of being a better feedback receiver:
Knowing what feedback you want and need.
Supportive mirror
Honest mirror
Appreciation, coaching, or evaluation
Moving from a fixed to a growth mindset.
Fixed: I am who I am and cant change
Growth: I am a work in progress
Practice asking for specific feedback
Ask about what you are doing well that is contributing to the team, and what is the one thing that you could do better or differently, that would improve the effectiveness of your team.
3. Sample Template
You can consider using a template like the one below.
Teammates Name:
Positive Feedback (three points) exactly as you would say it to the person, in full sentences. Use as much space as you need.
1.
2.
3.
Constructive Feedback (one point) exactly as you would say it to the person, in full sentences.
1.
Once all of you have prepared feedback for your teammates, you must deliver the feedback either in person, over an internet face-to-face connection, or over the phone (before week 5). Under no circumstances can you email or text your feedback. You will then write a summary of your experience and identify one specific goal based on the feedback you have received.
FEEDBACK REFLECTION PAPER:
Write up a 23-page reflection paper on your experience in giving and receiving feedback, and identify one specific goal based on the feedback that you received. Your goal should be specific, measurable, and achievable during the remainder of the course.
