Telephone interviews are probably the most difficult medium to interview with because you have such limited interaction with recruiters. With only the chance to express yourself by voice, tremendous emphasis must be placed on what you say and how you say it. Since you have no visual cues with which to gauge the interviewers reactions to your answers, it is extremely tough to express emotions, demonstrate attentiveness, or display professionalism. In phone interviews, you lose the advantages of using good eye contact and a smile to establish positive impressions. Likewise, it is a challenge for the recruiters to create a relaxed atmosphere with reassuring facial expressions or body language. As an interviewer, I can attest that phone interviews are great time and cost savers. However, I personally felt that I missed out on judging many of the nonverbal cues that could help me to find candidates who best fit with our company or team.
