Textbook publishers routinely use a bold font to highlight key terms and concepts. I want to know if this really improves learning. I randomly assign 38 subjects to two groups of 19. Group A reads a short chapter on the World War I Battle of Amiens in 1918. Group B reads a short chapter on the 1918 influenza epidemic. After a 10-minute break, all subjects take a 20-question multiple-choice exam on the topic they read about. For Group A, no terms in the chapter were highlighted. For Group B, terms directly relevant to the exam questions were bolded. On average, Group A had 15.17 correct answers (SD- 1.03) and Group B had 15.72 corect answers (SD-1.09), (36)-1.59, p>.05. a.
