The American realism school of thought is a reaction to an earlier school of thought, as with many other new attitudes and schools of thought. Realism launches an assault against the earlier school of thought, such as natural law theories and positivism law theories, and claims that these schools of thought have no regard for the facts of life experience. In other words, Realism believes that these earlier schools of thought are not practical or pragmatic; they are purely theoretical. Many scholars believe that the birth of American Realism can be attributed primarily to the rather different traditions of their judiciary. In fact, one of the leading proponents of  American Realism was Mr. Justice Holmes, a Justice of the US Supreme Court. Holmes's famous statements include: "The life of the law is experienced" and "The prophecies of what the courts will do... are what I mean by the law." Are Holmes's statements fair or not? Discuss.
