The authors also provide us with six ideas to look for and annotate as we read Tynack's excerpt "Whither History Books?" followed by Quentin Collie's rhetorical analysis of it (Greene and Lydinski 68-74). What is important here is before reading Collie's rhetorical analysis, first write your own annotations and answers to the following questions: • the situation that motivates his writing, • the purpose of his analysis and argument, • his main claim or thesis, • the appeals he makes to ethos, pathos, and logos • his use of language, and • who he believes his audience is. When your own annotations are finished, then read Collie's rhetorical analysis. Compare what Collie says to what you say in your annotations. Post what you find and how it is different from what Collie says. Finally post why you believe those differences exist. Reflect on why your understanding is different from Collie's. Be specific since writing vague or overly general responses is not helpful to you or classmates that might be reading your ideas. For example, to say that your understanding of Tynack's ideas and Collie' understanding are different because you are both different people with different points of view is just too vague. This is not helpful to you or any classmates because it doesn't discuss specific interpretations of vocabulary, examples, or explanations that Tynack presents or uses to try to convince us that he is right about history textbooks. Instead, be specific in your discussions and end your discussion of differences with your reflections about why those differences occurred and what you and Collie could have done to be more accurate in your understanding.
