. The data shown below come from a case-control study on the association between smoking and automobile accidents. There are 100 cases of fatalities from automobile accidents collected from police records and 200 controls selected randomly from the county where the accidents occurred. All subjects are licensed drivers in the county. Data on smoking and drinking was collected from spouses, friends and family. Of the 300 subjects in the study, 68 of the cases were smokers and 104 of the controls were smokers. As for data on drinking, of the 300 subjects in the study, 192 (80 cases and 112 controls) were classified as drinkers.
