The easiest way to make change is to count up from the purchase total to the amount of money given to you by the customer. Although cash register systems often tell you the exact amount of change to give, you should always be prepared to count change without the assistance of the cash register. For example, if the purchase amount was $12 and the customer gives you a $20 bill, keep the $20 bill visible on the ledge above the register or on top of the drawer compartments and, starting with $12, take out $1 bills, one at a time until you reach $15 ($3), then add another $5 bill to make $20. The total change the customer receives is $8 ($3+$5).
