Question:
Steve is a Department manager with a team of eight employees. He notices that one of his staff members, Tom, seems to lack direction, displays low self-esteem, and has a number of performance issues – regularly showing up late for work and taking more sick days than the other employees. Steve has tried a number of things, but has had little or no success.
Steve spoke to Alicia in HR who suggested he might try coaching Tom. Steve approached Tom and asked if he wanted to try coaching. They both agreed it was worth trying and they agreed to work together once a week over three months.
The first thing Steve asked was for Tom to write a list of the things he was good at and the things he wasn't good at. This gave them both a focus on the areas they could work on to help him improve over the coaching and monitoring period.
