The figure below (see following page) shows the architectural scheme layout of a 9 storey hotel, with basement, that is to be constructed. The following architectural and site constraints are to be considered in its design. • • No internal columns are permitted at the ground floor, which is an open lobby area Stair and elevator shafts are continuous throughout the height of the structure Parking is to be provided at basement levels below ground, with its overall depth minimise The building covers its entire site and is located in an urban city centre. The water table was found 1m below ground ● The building site is located on coastal reclaimed land, made up of under-consolidated sandy material Answer the following questions on the structural design of this building: a. Given the architectural layout and design constraints, propose and discuss a structural scheme via which you would transfer gravity loads generated in the floors to the foundations. In your answer provide supporting annotated sketches of the structural layout in plan and in section showing where you would place beams (primary & secondary) and columns; indicate on your sketchs the gravity load path to the foundation. [7 marks] b. Given you answer in "a" above, propose and discuss a lateral system for your scheme. Also provide an annotated sketch of the lateral system components, indicating the lateral load path to the foundation. 15 marks] c. Discuss the potential seismic risk of construction at this site.
