Question:
The final long essay assignment of this class—you will use a variety of resources in order to make an argument about the quest for meaning. You will be exploring the following questions: what makes a meaningful life? How do we construct meaning in our lives? With all the readings we have done for this class and all the research you do for this paper, what is the history of this quest for meaning? How have people defined meaning over time?
Make sure that you use a minimum of 6 sources—academic articles, book chapters, news articles, etc—to form a cultural commentary/argument about the quest for meaning. In addition to (but not instead of) these academic research sources, feel free to draw on a variety of cultural exhibits to make your argument, including Twitter and Instagram feeds, song lyrics, TikTok and YouTube videos, etc. This is your chance to be a detective of your culture and its search for meaning.
Make sure that your thesis statement (the sentence or sentences that form your argument) is specific and clear. Make sure your essay has all these elements: thesis statement/argument, counterargument, at least six sources that you use and analyze deeply, evidence to support your argument/s, and a conclusion that summarizes briefly what the paper has covered but also looks at the larger questions and deeper implications of the essay overall.
