The following article reports the results of a language production experiment investigating message planning.
Brown-Schmidt, S., and Konopka, A. (2008). Little houses and casas pequeñas: message formulation and syntactic form in unscripted speech with speakers of English and Spanish. Cognition, 109(2), 274-280.
Instructions:
1) Read the paper. The paper can be downloaded for free through the University of Toronto Library. To download the paper, you will need to use your UTORID and password. Part of the assignment is locating and downloading the article. Please do not email me for a copy. Give yourself ample time to locate the article and read it before you need to start writing up your answers.
2) Answer the following seven (7) questions. Make sure to answer all parts of each question. Read each question carefully. Please answer each question separately and number each question. There are points assigned for each question and if we cannot figure out which question you are answering, we won’t be able to assign you points for that question. Please do not answer the entire assignment in essay format.
3) Use your own words! No quotes from the article are permitted. You may use some of their vocabulary but direct quotes will be penalized.
4) The word limit for the whole assignment is 1200 words. Aim for at most 150-200 words or so per question. Longer assignments may be penalized. Please write the number of words on your assignment.
5) Submit on Quercus by the deadline. See the syllabus for the late policy. No emailed submissions will be accepted. PDF submissions are preferred. If we cannot open your file, we will not be able to grade it.
6) Come to drop-in hours on Friday, June 4 from 10-11 am EDT with questions about the assignment.
