The indeterminate sentencing model like its counterpart is not without flaws but has far more positive outcomes for society as a whole. An indeterminate sentence is mutually beneficial for both the offender and the general public by allowing an inmate the ability to be released earlier than the maximum sentence but keeping them under supervision by parole. The inmate must complete educational, programs that are related to their crime e.g. ASAT program, and have a satisfactory behavior record to prove to the parole board that they are reformed and able to return to society. The Declaration of Principles of the First Congress of the National Prison Association urged: "preemptory sentences ought to be replaced by those of indeterminate length
