The ink level inside a printer cartridge is monitored by a chip. Static Control Components (SCC) makes these chips and sells them to companies that refill or re-manufacture brand name toner cartridges. Lexmark sued SCC claiming they violated the DMCA by producing a chip which makes it possible for other cartridges to work on Lexmark printers. SCC said Lexmark did not encrypt their chip code.
