The Mercator projected map in the previous exercise is based on a grid that helps to maintain directions (N-S-E-W). It has been used for hundreds of years. Unfortunately, as seen in the exercise, the map distorts the size of landmasses, which can lead to a host of problems when trying to understand the world. The map in Figure 2 above is presented in an AuthaGraph projection. This map, developed in 1999, maintains much better proportions than others, but it is not without its own set of problems.
