The motivation for learning how to diagram programs in memory starting with very simple programs, which you could very likely trace in your head without diagrams, is to ensure when we get to much more complex programs you are able to understand what is going on behind the scenes because programs will soon contain more complexity than you are able to keep track of in your mind's memory.
