The plans presented are for a classroom block at a local primary school. The structure is of
load bearing masonry block wall construction and supports a mm thick roof slab. The
thickness of the walls is as shown on the plans and sections. The roof will be used for assembly
purposes during sporting and other activities put on by the school. As the design consultants,
you are required to develop basic reinforced masonry and concrete framing elements for the
building using the requirements of CUBIC. Occupancy loads may be taken from Table of
the ASCE or Table in CUBIC.
General data typical to all groups
Material Specifications & Dead Loads
Maximum size of coarse aggregate
Dead Loads on slab
Floor tile finishes on roof slab
Electrical & Mechanical services in roof slab
Using the guidelines laid out in CUBIC, put in the reinforced concrete stiffeners required
for the block wall masonry building shown.
Marks
Make a neat labelled, dimensioned sketch of at least one of the stiffeners type you used
in part above.
Marks
Although stiffeners could be placed in the wall panel between the windows at the rear of
each classroom, it is not absolutely necessary. Explain why.
State if the two wall types in the structure meet the size requirements of load bearing
walls. Give reasons for your answer.
