The project is to design a prototype for a garage wall mount tire rack. It should be a functional design suitable for fabrication and testing as a step to a marketable, profitable product. The initial design requirements are:
.The rack should have a capacity of storing a set of 4tires. Weight of one tire is 282.515kg and the diameter is 0.31m.Consider the factor of safety for design load to be 2.The 4tires are distributed as evenly distributed load. the width of one tire is 0.171m.
.The rack is rigidly mounted on the wall, exclude from your design.
.One of two configurations are to be designed, see Figure 1and Figure 2below.
.When not in use, member 2can be folded up or down to conserve space. Member 4will be disconnected from one end and fold or removed entirely.
5. Show all the calculations, including the reactions on the support, the bending of the member 3, pin reactions. The tire rack structure should be constructed from commercially available structural members, such as angles, square or Sch 40pipes, etc. (Utilize toolbox in solidworks)
.The recommended material is ASTM A36carbon steel. Yield strenght is 248MPa. Ultimate strength is 400MPa.(use this material)
.Member 1mounting plate, should be constructed from angles. Member 2-drop tube, should be made from square tubes, with 4holes on both sides, evenly spaced. Member 3cross tube, should be round tubes/pipes.
.Member 3can be mounted on different set of holes on member 2,to hold tires in different sizes. Note the tires should not lean against the wall, all its weights are carried by member 3.The length of member 3will depend on your estimate of the width of 4tires, plus some wiggle room.
.Member 4s shape will be picked at your discretion.
.For simplicity, consider all joints pin connected. Give a list of size and length used. Calculate pin reactions.
.The manner of load is evenly distributed load. Refer figure.
