Question:
The project should be based on the most recently published Annual Report and should cover a three (minimum) to five (maximum) year period. Each student must work on a different company Perspective (5 points)
You must select and describe the perspective for this report. It could be that of an existing or prospective lender, a securities analyst required to make buy or sell (stock) recommendations, a labor union negotiator, an existing or potential investor or any other interested group. Industry Information (20 points)
This section should be at least 1.5 - 2.0 pages (1.5 spaced) and should contain general information about the industry. You have total latitude as to the specific information you want to include here. Research the web for articles and other information that you could include in this section. This section should prepare the reader for the next section. Background Company Information (20 points)
This section must be at least a two to three pages (1.5 spaced) and contain information pertaining to the company as a whole. Again, you have total latitude as to what type of information you want to include here. The Annual Report as well as a search of the Web for updated information about the company could be useful resources. Evidence of having visited the company’s website is also required. Integration of information from this source is mandatory. Quantitative Analysis (75 points)
Compute at least 15 financial ratios for a period of at least three years. This will help you ascertain if there are any trends for any of the ratios over this period of time. The ratios you select must complement your perspective. For example, if you choose the perspective of a creditor to conduct this analysis, then you may want to emphasize the liquidity ratios. Please refer to your textbook for a listing of the various ratios. You may also want to refer to your Principles of Accounting textbook. This material should also be covered in Principles II. After you have computed these ratios for a period of at least three years, please compare them to the industry ratios. The industry ratios can be obtained from various sources. Researching the existence and location of these industry ratios is part of this project.(Hint: It is s not as difficult as it may seem at first blush) Next, I need you to do a brief write up (a few lines) for each ratio based on you’re the results of your computation of that ratio for a three year period as well as your comparison of those computations to the industry average. A suggested format is as follows: Name of ratio 2019 2018 2015 Industry Average Principal Competitor Current Ratio 1.6 1.5 1.4 1.0 1.4 Write up EPS .50 .40 .30 .35 .40 Write up Additionally, you may want to review the Cash Flow statements as well and offer further comments that may be relevant to your analysis of the company. Competitive Analysis (20 points) There has to be some reference and comparisons made to at least one significant competitor within the industry selected. (A detailed financial analysis of the competitor is not required. However, you need to do a ratio analysis on the competitor for the most recent year. Your ratio analysis needs to include a minimum of 10 ratios. These ratios you choose for your competitor must be from the pool of 15 that you selected earlier for your company. This will strengthen your overall analysis. Evidence of having visited the selected competitor’s (print a copy of the page) Website is required. In the event the competitor does not have a website and/or homepage, then, evidence of having visited another significant competitor is required even though this may not be the company being compared to in your project. Conclusion (10 points) Based on your overall analysis, please state your recommendation. For example, if you chose the perspective of a prospective lender, you may wish to state whether you would consider extending a loan to the company. I know that in the real world you need additional information to fully make that decision. However, your answer need be only in the context of your research and overall analysis. Please be mindful that your analysis must support your conclusion.
