Problem solving includes decision making. Both skills require an understanding of the current situation and a plan to implement. A problem occurs when there is a difference between what actually happens and what one wants to happen.

1.Identify the problem-a problem must first be recognized. This involves a thorough evaluation of the situation before any planning or changes are started.

2.Understanding the problem includes a review of data, processes, etc. Answer the question,: Why does this problem occur?

3.Defining the solution overall leads to the plan.

4.Creating the plan provides a step by step process to follow. Plans should be in writing for clarity, include the steps, the resources required and any other pertinent details.

5.Implementing the plan includes both following the plan, and evaluating it, to determine if any major or minor changes are needed.
