The Transaction and Code Sets Standard are rules to standardize the electronic exchange of patient-identifiable and health-related information. In other words, the heart of where the promised savings and simplification are realized. It is very important to know the difference between the codes because they are used in different formatting systems. For example, ICD-10-PCS codes are used in hospitals or long-term facilities, and CDT-4 codes are used by Dentists. Lastly, the one factor I can describe the HIPAA regulations is that they can secure electronic access to the medical databases. This helps to ensure that any information disclosed to healthcare providers and health plans, or information that is created by them, transmitted, or stored by them, is subject to strict security controls.
