The XYZ company manufactures two models of bathroom scales, deluxe and standard. They are identical except the deluxe model has more chrome and a dial of different design. Both are made in four colors. Design a better method of inspecting scales (a) with the present volume of 12 scales per minute and (b) with a proposed increased output of 24 scales per minute. The scales are now inspected by a person who steps onto each scale as it passes by on a conveyor moving at the rate of 12 feet per minute. The scales are spaced 1 foot apart on the conveyor. The inspector observes the dial and if the scale indicates his correct weight within ±1/4 pound, he steps off the scale and it moves on to the packing and shipping department. If the scale shows his weight to be too high or too low, he pushes the scale off the conveyor with his foot onto an adjoining surface. The defective scales are adjusted or repaired and again placed on the conveyor for inspection.
