There are many different approaches to consider while drafting an effective argument. The first important thing I would suggest for a good argument is that it must be relevant. Whatever it is that you are arguing must be based in a premise that the audience can decide to believe based on the argument itself and the evidence provided. But this premise must be relevant to whatever the argument is and ultimately support the findings or conclusion of the evidence. If an argument lacks relevance it will fall flat for the audience and fail to link the argument to the conclusion of the premise.

Secondly I believe an argument should not be rooted solely in emotion. A strong argument base would include logical explanations for the suggested conclusion. With that being said, an effective argument could very easily be crafted on emotion but supported through logic. Part of this second important thing to remember is evidence. In order to base your argument in logic, even if the premise is emotional, you must include reliable evidence that supports your conclusion of the argument. Without viable resources or evidence to back up your argument claim, there is no way to connect the premise to the conclusion and therefore the argument has no legs to run on. A relevant argument that uses logic and evidence to support its conclusion will often find an audience willing to listen and understand to the premise of the argument. In order to provide logical evidence that supports your conclusion, this might also include being able to provide evidence that refutes the opposite side of your argument. Without this, you may be able to provide a logical reasoning that supports your premise, but the other side of the argument may be able to do so also. The decider in this situation will be the argument that not only provides logic and evidence to support their own conclusion, but in the process also refutes any rebuttals to the argument.
