There are two general methods for error correction: open$-$loop and feedback based. With open loop methods, the data is coded $($for example using Hamming code$)$ so that errors could be detected and corrected. With feedback$-$based methods, the receiver send some feedback to the sender$,$ indicating whether there has been an error in the received data. If such messages are received by the sender$,$ the sender will retransmit the data.

Open$-$loop Error Correction methods $($e$.$g$.,$ a Hamming code$)$ are often preferable to the feedback$-$type protocols when propagation delay is very long or transmission$/$retransmission is not desired$/$possible$.$
