Question:
There have been four applicants for Maggie's assistant position, and four for David's assistant position. The applicants are as follows:
Maggie's assistant position.
Applicant 1 - Svetlana
Svetlana is 27 years old with a young child. She gave up full-time work when her child was 9 months old because she was constantly having to take time off to attend to his medical needs (which are ongoing). Previously, Svetlana worked as a croupier in a casino. She has a reference from the casino, which is dated before the child was born, which says that she is reliable and hard working. Svetlana seems easy to get along with.
Applicant 2 - June
June is 54 years old and managed her family's busy export business until they sold it last year. June single-handedly ran the office. She is now bored and would like a part-time job. June doesn't have a CV or any references. She has a very likeable personality.
Applicant 3 - Derek
Derek is 31 years old and is an ex cashier from a large hardware store. His CV shows that he held that position for 6 months, and before that he worked as an assistant in a shoe shop. Derek likes the idea of being an organiser but would prefer to work full time. His reference from the hardware store says that he was always punctual and left of his own volition. Derek seems a little pushy.
Applicant 4 - Greta
Greta is 41 years old and seems to be very keen to please. In the interview she described herself as being most comfortable in a workplace that provides very clear instructions. She also mentioned that she doesn't like taking the initiative or telling other people what to do. Currently Greta is a receptionist in a hotel. Her references are excellent. Greta appears to have a slightly timid personality.
David's assistant position
Applicant 1 - Maisie
Maisie is 26 years old and worked as a real estate receptionist 4 years ago. Maisie doesn't say why she left that position. She has since worked in an ice cream parlour, and likes the people contact. Maisie doesn't have a licence. Her reference from the real estate company specifies when she worked there and says she was good at answering the telephone.
Applicant 2 - Harvey
Harvey is 29 years old and has just acquired his real estate licence. Currently he is a shift manager for a large department store. Harvey is very enthusiastic about going into real estate and likes the idea of working with buyers. He can see that this position could easily be full time and is happy to work the hours that suit. He would like to start work tomorrow but knows he will have to give notice to his current employer. His CV shows that the job in the department store is the only job he's ever had, and that he has been there for 10 years. He doesn't have any references because he hasn't told them yet that he's leaving. Harvey appears to have an easy-going nature.
Applicant 3 - John
John is 69 years old and has been retired for the last 2 years. He worked in real estate 6 years ago but found it a bit stressful. His reference from the real estate company says he was honest and trustworthy. John seems rather reserved, but very polite.
Applicant 4 - Japonica
Japonica is 25 years old and has had 6 jobs since leaving school. She hasn't been working for 3 months, so during that time has acquired her real estate licence. Her reference from her last job, a waitress in a gentleman's bar, says that she got on well with the public. Japonica is very friendly.
Task 3 a. Which of the applicants are most suitable for the two positions advertised?
b. Explain why you have selected these two, and why the others are less suitable. In your answer consider how each person would fit in with and develop the team culture in the office.
