This assignment asks to meet the following outcomes:

  1. Identify and analyze strategies used by authors to persuade audiences..

PURPOSE

The final Critical Analysis assignment is designed to evaluate everything that you have learned all semester in regards to summary writing, analysis, and evaluating arguments. The article you are to work with is Rebecca Heilweil, "AI is finally good at stuff, and that's a problem,"Vox https://www.vox.com/recode/2022/12/7/23498694/ai-artificial-intelligence-chat-gpt-openai

The Critical Analysis paper is composed of two major parts: a) Summary and b) Analysis. In short, you will be summarizing and analyzing an article in a written assignment totalling around five paragraphs.

Paper should start with a brief introduction with a thesis statement wherein you make an argument about the effectiveness of the author's appeals to these rhetorical strategies, a paragraph where you summarize the article, two paragraphs of analysis, and a brief conclusion.

Your summary of the article should be a clear and concise collection of paraphrases of the author's arguments laid out in logical sequence. Here are the necessary features of the summary:

Most important arguments paraphrased and presented in logical order, using reporting verbs and references to the author Coherent and consistent use of transitions signalling the different points of the argument Accurate concluding statement (e.g. "The author concludes by stating...")

Your analysis will follow directly after the summary. Do not include titles or subheadings to separate both pieces of writing. Rather, use a transitional phrase and a topic sentence to indicate that you are transitioning into your analysis.

Here are the necessary features of the analysis component:

Introduction to your analysis: Topic sentence conveying whether you think the article's appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos are persuasive/unpersuasive/somewhat persuasive, and why (make sure the analysis that follows matches your thesis statement) Evidence-based analysis of the author's appeals to rhetorical strategies: Paraphrases and quotations of specific passages and and supporting details, followed by your analysis Analysis of how the author uses multiple rhetorical appeals to further support their argument, and an evaluation of the effectiveness of those appeals A conclusion to wrap up your assignment

A successful Critical Analysis will: Identify the author's thesis Paraphrase the major arguments Arrange the paraphrases into a logically ordered summary Outline how the author makes their argument Evaluate the argument in terms of Pathos, Ethos, and Logos (expert opinion, personal experience, expert opinion, logic, facts, and statistics). Cite specific passages and demonstrate how they function within the overall argument Identify any significant strengths or weaknesses of the argument (or a mixture of both) and tie them back to the claims of the argument (evaluation)
